Ryan Bertrand withdraws from England squad with back complaint

Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand has withdrawn from the England squad following a back issue.

The 28-year-old, who helped Southampton to a 2-0 FA Cup quarterfinal victory against Wigan on Sunday, returned to his club for further assessment on his back, after training on his own inside away from the main session earlier in the day.

The FA called Bertrand's exit "a precautionary measure" but confirmed he will not play in upcoming friendlies against Netherlands and Italy.

Ashley Young and Danny Rose remain left-back options in the England squad, while under-fire Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw is among the options to replace Bertrand if manager Gareth Southgate decides to do so.

Earlier, Southgate brought Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold into the training session to help bolster numbers, with Adam Lallana also training on his own and Marcus Rashford, Jake Livermore and James Tarkowski leaving the main group early.
