England have learned from shock Euro 2016 loss to Iceland - John Stones

England defender John Stones says the players have learned from their humiliating Euro 2016 round-of-16 defeat to Iceland.

England, then under the management of Roy Hodgson, crashed out of the tournament to unfancied opponents as they lost an early lead to go down 2-1.

But as Gareth Southgate's side prepare to face World Cup holders Germany in a friendly at Dortmund on Wednesday, Stones told Sky Sports: "We have got Gareth and he is trying to put his stamp on it and look back to what has happened in the past, which I think is vital.

"We don't just want to forget it -- we want to learn from it and move on and hopefully get better from those experiences, both as a team and as individuals."

England take on a Germany side they beat 3-2 from 2-0 down in a friendly before Euro 2016.

It will be Southgate's first game in charge as full-time England manager, and Stones said he saw similarities between him and his Manchester City club boss Pep Guardiola.

"I don't think they're too different -- both want to play football, both have got great football brains and knowledge about the game,'' he said.

"I think the fundamentals of what they want to get across come over really well and that makes it easier for us as players.

"I think that's a great quality as a manager, giving you little bits here and not flooding you with too many things."
