Alan Shearer to present new documentary on football and dementia

Former England and Newcastle captain Alan Shearer is to present a documentary on the link between football and dementia.

"Dementia: Football's Silent Shame?" is due to air on BBC One this summer and aims to discover if footballers are more at risk from suffering from dementia later in life.

Three members of England's 1966 World Cup-winning squad have had Alzheimer's -- the most common cause of dementia -- while a study earlier this month found a potential link between heading in football and the illness.

"After seeing the movie 'Concussion' [about brain disease in NFL], I was intrigued," Shearer told BBC Sport.

"I was aware of former football players, legends who I grew up watching, suffering from dementia. Could this affect football and footballers too?

"The more I read about it, the more I felt this was a subject that could no longer be ignored."
