Sammy Lee ousted as England assistant in reshuffle - sources

Sammy Lee has lost his job as England assistant manager as Gareth Southgate overhauls the setup, sources close to the former Liverpool midfielder have told ESPN FC.

The sources said 57-year-old Lee had been told by Southgate and Dan Ashworth, the Football Association's technical director, that his services will no longer be required.

Southgate was confirmed as England's permanent manager on Wednesday after a temporary spell in charge.

Lee, a member of Sven-Goran Eriksson's England coaching team, was restored to the setup by Sam Allardyce in the summer after his appointment as successor to Roy Hodgson.

Having worked as Allardyce's first-team coach at Bolton before succeeding him there, he was regarded as a close confidante during the manager's 67-day England reign.

Despite being retained by Southgate during his four-game run as interim manager, Lee's involvement with the England setup has now come to an end with the new boss keen to appoint his own staff.

Doubts remain over the future of goalkeeping coach Martyn Margetson, another Allardyce appointment, who left his role with Wales to join the FA after Euro 2016.

Steve Holland, the Chelsea coach, is expected to be confirmed as Southgate's No. 2, having been drafted into the setup by him.

The FA has not confirmed Lee's departure, with sources at the organisation saying announcements on the coaching team will not be made until next week.
