Sir Bobby Charlton to attend armed forces' 'Game of Remembrance'

England and Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton will attend a special "Game of Remembrance" between British and German armed forces on Wednesday.

The charity game, to be played at Burton Albion's Pirelli Stadium, is taking place to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the Battle of the Somme during the First World War.

Charlton was present for the "Game of Truce" in December 2014 -- a match held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Christmas truce -- and will again be present to greet the teams during Wednesday's match.

Major Mike Mahoney, of the Army Football Association, said the game is "very, very exciting" and "going to be really massive for the army."

He added: "When you talk about the First World War, you talk about the Somme. The first day was the worst day in terms of British casualties. I think people overlook the fact that the battle continued until November.

"The day is about commemorating those who lost their lives as well as helping to support those who are living and have served in places such as Iraq and are dependent on the Royal British Legion."

The British army side won the "Game of Truce" 1-0 and Maj. Mahoney added: "I would imagine that the German team will be looking for revenge."
