England's Gareth Southgate set to watch Ross Barkley on Friday - sources

Interim England manager Gareth Southgate is set to cast an eye over Ross Barkley in Everton's clash with Crystal Palace on Friday night ahead of a recall to the England squad, sources have told ESPN FC.

Southgate, the England under-21 manager, has been named England senior boss for the next four games after Sam Allardyce's departure earlier this week following controversial remarks published in an investigation in the Daily Telegraph.

Barkley was surprisingly omitted from Allardyce's first squad for the World Cup qualifying win over Slovakia earlier this month.

The 22-year-old, who was an unused member of England's Euro 2016 squad and he will look to impress Southgate enough to win a recall to the squad for the Malta and Slovenia doubleheader

Southgate is expected to name his squad for the World Cup qualifiers on Sunday.

The game at Goodison Park will also allow Southgate to check on the form of Everton defensive duo Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines.
