Phil Jagielka: I knocked in a few walls after missing out on Euro 2016

Everton captain Phil Jagielka has revealed he took his anger out on a wall with a sledgehammer after discovering he had missed out on a place in England's Euro 2016 squad.

Jagielka, 34, failed to make former Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson's selection for the summer's tournament in France, with centre-backs Gary Cahill, Chris Smalling and John Stones being preferred ahead of him.

"I got a bit more time to spend with the family, a bit more time to reflect -- I lost two semifinals [with Everton] and was told I wasn't going to the Euros," Jagielka told the Daily Telegraph.

"I ended up knocking a few walls down at home; got the sledgehammer out and got the aggression out that way. But we got a good two-week holiday as a family and have to look at the positive spin on it.

"I was grumpy for a few days, my missus will tell you, but there was no way I could change what was going to happen.

"In the end, in hindsight, it was maybe the best thing for me as I also got a pretty decent rest and I felt like I had come back with the hunger as strong as ever. I am desperate to play every game, captain the [Everton] team."

Jagielka was, however, named in the last England squad for the World Cup qualifier against Slovakia earlier this month, but says he is realistic about his chances of breaking back into the starting lineup.

"Realistically it [Euro 2016] was my last time to go to a tournament," Jagielka, who has won 39 England caps, said. "I'm 34 now. If I'm looking now, John [Stones] has come in and done really well. I think it will be very difficult for me to get any game time. Whether that's true or not only time will tell."
