Gareth Southgate: Responsibility and honour to be in charge of England

Interim England manager Gareth Southgate has said managing England for the rest of this year will be "a huge honour."

Southgate, the England under-21 coach, has been temporarily promoted to the senior role after the departure of Sam Allardyce.

Allardyce was forced to step down as England boss on Tuesday after just 67 days in charge, having been caught telling undercover Daily Telegraph reporters how to "get around" transfer rules.

Former England defender Southgate, who will be in charge of the Three Lions' next four matches, told the official Football Association website: "I was very proud to have played more than 50 times for my country and to have worn the armband, so to manage England will be a huge responsibility and a huge honour for me.

"It's a difficult circumstance for me, because we've lost two senior coaches in the last few months who have both been very good to me, so that complicates my feelings. I certainly wish them both all the best for the future.

"With my experience with the Under-21s in international football, and having worked with so many of the players who have moved up to the seniors as well, I think we are in a good position to prepare for these games."

The 46-year-old Southgate's first test comes against Malta at Wembley on Oct. 8, with a trip to Slovenia following three days later.

He said it had "obviously been a difficult situation for the FA but it was important that there was some stability and continuity for everybody."
