Marcus Rashford's 'great humility' led to England U21 success - Southgate

Marcus Rashford was praised for his "humility" by Gareth Southgate after the teenager scored a hat trick on his England under-21 debut in a 6-1 home win over Norway on Tuesday.

Manchester United striker Rashford had been selected for the under-21s rather than the England senior squad despite previously coming on twice as a substitute during Euro 2016.

He showed the right attitude for the Young Lions in Colchester, though, striking in two goals and then adding a third from the penalty spot.

Under-21 manager Southgate was asked on BT Sport about what had impressed him about Rashford and replied: "His mentality all week. He came with great humility. He's young so you would hope that would be the case but it's not always the case."

England manager Sam Allardyce was in the crowd watching and was seen applauding and smiling.

Discussing whether Rashford would be considered for a quick return into the senior squad, Southgate said: "I'll speak to Sam in the next couple of days, I'm sure, but I'm sure it's given him food for thought. But he'll be pleased with some of the performances of his players on Sunday.

"What we saw all week [from Rashford] we saw tonight, so I wasn't surprised in any way. I don't think anyone can rubbish the experience, the key is if they come down they get to play and put on a show like that.

"The Under-21 group is tight-knit and they are welcoming to newcomers, but they have high expectations for them to work the way we work. If they don't match that the group will sort them out quickly.

"You could see he was very comfortable in the environment and that is credit to everyone involved."

Rashford said he hoped he had sent a message to both Allardyce and Man United's Jose Mourinho after his England Under-21 debut treble.

"It means a lot [that Allardyce was here]. It's the England seniors, there is a new manager and they are doing well. Everyone is working hard to get into that side, so it was important that he was here to see our development," he told BT Sport.

"It was a good debut to have. It was a strong performance from the boys. Norway played well, despite the score line. We worked hard for the whole 90 minutes and I think in the end we deserved the result.

"I'd say the penalty was my favourite, to be honest. It was the first penalty I have scored since I have been a professional."

Rashford has now scored on his club debut, his Premier League debut, his England debut and his England under-21 debut. He has scored in the first competitive matches he has played under four different managers -- Louis van Gaal, Roy Hodgson, Mourinho and Southgate.

The goals mean Rashford will head into the Manchester derby on Saturday on a high and he wants to use his performance as a reminder to United boss Mourinho.

The forward added: "That's all you want to do as a young player, give your manager a decision about whether to play you. I'm just looking forward to it."
