Arsenal's Jack Wilshere hoping to move on from England agony

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere says England's humiliating loss to Iceland at Euro 2016 will always linger in his memory and admitted that the pressure "got to us" in the game.

Wilshere came on after half-time in the round-of-16 match in France but could not help Roy Hodgson's team overcome a 2-1 deficit as the Three Lions crashed out early in a major tournament again.

Asked how long it will take to get over that loss, Wilshere said: "It's always there in your memory, you're thinking 'what if?' But in football the good thing is ... it's a new season, it's a new start and we have to put that behind us now."

Wilshere was speaking at a news conference in San Jose, Calif., ahead of the Gunners' preseason game against the MLS All-Stars on Friday. Wilshere is expected to feature in that match after sitting out Arsenal's trip to French club Lens on Friday.

The midfielder missed nearly all of the last campaign with a broken ankle and acknowledged that it will be "a big season for me" as he tries to re-establish himself in the Arsenal side.

And he said he was still happy to get playing time with England at the European Championship, even though he was mainly used as a substitute by Hodgson.

"I needed that. The last thing I need was to have seven weeks off after working hard to get back for the Euros," he said. "Of course the Euros were disappointing for us. ... We should have done better.

"But I think where we went wrong was in the Iceland game, we simply weren't good enough on the day. We played well enough leading up to that. ... Going into the Iceland game we were favourites, we should have beaten them. But maybe the pressure got to us and on the day we weren't good enough."
