Fabio Capello: Disallowed Frank Lampard goal biggest disappointment

Former England coach Fabio Capello has said the biggest disappointment of his coaching career was the Frank Lampard goal that never was against Germany in the 2010 World Cup.

Capello's England lost the second round match 4-1 -- but, at 2-1 down, a Lampard shot that hit the bar and clearly crossed the line was not given.

The controversy generated by the decision not to award a goal helped bring about the adoption of goal-line technology.

But as he prepared to celebrate his 70th birthday later this month Capello, looking back on his career in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, said the moment still frustrated him.

"As a coach, my greatest disappointment was with England -- Lampard's goal disallowed against Germany at the 2010 World Cup," he added.

"But even in this case, that injustice led to the adoption of [goal-line] technology."

Capello went on to coach England's first Euro 2016 opponents Russia from 2012 until last year, when he was dismissed and replaced by Leonid Slutsky.
