England's Daniel Sturridge could miss out as Roy Hodgson considers options

England manager Roy Hodgson is considering the situation of Daniel Sturridge as he finalises his squad for Euro 2016.

Hodgson must break bad news to two members of his 25-man provisional squad by Tuesday and is weighing up how best to balance his options in midfield and attack.

It is not a straightforward equation, with Wayne Rooney, Raheem Sterling, Jamie Vardy and Adam Lallana having the ability to blur the lines between positions.

Manchester United's Marcus Rashford was a surprise entry on Hodgson's original long list but seemingly assured his place in France by scoring 138 seconds into his international career in Friday's 2-1 win over Australia.

That leaves Liverpool's Sturridge, who missed the match with a calf complaint, vulnerable.

He is the only player left in the England camp who has not played either of the last two friendlies, but consideration is still being given to taking a full complement of five strikers.

"People are deciding it is either or between Rashford and Sturridge or between two midfield players,'' Hodgson said.

"I don't mind that, but nobody is giving more thought to the subject than we are ourselves.

"There were some good performances [against Australia] and some that weren't quite so good. That's probably to be expected.

"If anything I feel more comfortable with the decision I have to make than I did going into the game.

"But never on one occasion will you find me quoted as saying: 'We can only have X number of forwards, we must have this many midfield players.'''

Sturridge's fitness is sure to be a question mark, with the 26-year-old having only been fit enough to play 43 matches in the past two seasons for Liverpool in all competitions.

Hodgson has called Sturridge's recent calf issue a "minor injury" but warned: "If it turns out his injury would keep him out the Euros or he would be unfit when we play Russia, that might make a difference."
