Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy backed for England partnership by Pochettino

LONDON -- Mauricio Pochettino sees no reason why Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy cannot form a striking partnership for England at this summer's European Championship.

Kane and Vardy were both relative unknowns 18 months ago but the duo will start Tottenham's Premier League match against Leicester City on Wednesday as two of the most feared strikers in the country, boasting 26 league goals between them this season.

Leicester's Vardy is joint-top of the top flight's scoring charts with 15 goals, and broke a Premier League record for scoring in 11 consecutive matches earlier this term.

Kane, meanwhile, finished 2015 with more goals than any other Premier League player in the calendar year and has scored 14 in all competitions this season.

Both players are part of Roy Hodgson's thoughts, although the England boss' captain Wayne Rooney -- who, by contrast, has scored five times in the league this season -- has been the first-choice striker in recent internationals.

Pochettino believes Kane and Vardy are perfectly capable of forming a partnership, however.

"Yes, why not?" Pochettino told a prematch news conference, when asked if the duo could play together.

"They have quality enough to play. They both show unbelievable skills. If Roy decides to put them both together, they have the skill to play."

Kane, 22, has exclusively played as a lone striker for Spurs this season and dropped deep on the rare occasions he was partnered with either Roberto Soldado or Emmanuel Adebayor last term.

Pochettino, however, is adamant that he could work in a pair with Vardy but hinted that one or the other was more likely to partner England's record goal-scorer Rooney.

"They can play together. It's like Rooney with Vardy or Rooney with Harry Kane. Always good players can play together," he added.
