Phil Jagielka to captain England for first time against Lithuania

England manager Roy Hodgson has said that Phil Jagielka will captain the country against Lithuania on Monday night.

With skipper Wayne Rooney and vice-captain Gary Cahill having been released from the squad following the 2-0 win over Estonia, the captain's armband was left vacant for Monday's Euro 2016 qualifier in Vilnius.

And Hodgson announced on the eve of the game that Jagielka, 33, would lead the team out at the LFF Stadium.

"I am very pleased to have Phil Jagielka here with me. He will be my captain tomorrow evening," Hodgson said on Sunday.

It will be the first time the Everton centre-back has captained his country and it is a prospect he is thrilled about.

"Obviously I am delighted that Roy came and found me and broke the news,'' Jagielka said. "It is a great honour for me personally and we've got a big task ahead of us [on Monday], to do something that we can be proud of."

If England win on Monday then they will qualify for next summer's finals in France with a 100 percent record.

"We started this campaign a while ago and the job was to try to win every single game," Jagielka said. "Normally you say that and probably not a lot of people expect to do so, but it is nice [on Monday] night we will have the opportunity to do so.

"We know it is going to be a difficult game. We have spoken about the [artificial] surface -- yeah, it will be different, but a lot of us have trained or even played on similar surfaces. We really just can't wait to get it going and hopefully get that 10th win and finish off in style.''

Having already secured top spot in Group E, Hodgson decided to release Rooney, Cahill, Michael Carrick, James Milner and Joe Hart to their clubs after the win over Estonia at Wembley.

But Hodgson added: "[Monday] is a big occasion. I think all qualifiers are big occasions. We are looking forward to it. We are very fortunate in the sense that we have come through the match on Friday evening [against Estonia] unscathed in terms of injuries.

"I think we have a very interesting team for Phil to lead out [on Monday] -- a young team, obviously, but players that we believe in.We are very conscious of the fact that we have a perfect record and we also know it is not a given that we will win the game.

"We are playing a team that also wants to win -- adept, if you like, at playing on the [artificial] surface that we'll be playing on [on Monday] evening. It is a tough task ahead of us but we're ready for that I think and we will do our level best to try and achieve it.''
