Tim Sherwood rejected FA request for Jack Grealish to train with England

Tim Sherwood rejected a proposal which would have allowed Jack Grealish to spend some time with the England squad next week, Roy Hodgson has revealed.

Grealish turned his back on the Republic of Ireland and pledged his allegiance to England, the country of his birth, on Monday after months of speculation.

The former Republic of Ireland Under-21 player will not be able to play for the Three Lions until he gets his international clearance in November, but Hodgson views him as a potential star of the future and was keen to get the player involved in the England set-up as soon as possible.

The England manager wanted Grealish to train with the senior squad ahead of their Euro 2016 qualifiers against Estonia and Lithuania later this month, but Aston Villa manager Sherwood had other ideas.

"The Football Association wanted him to come up and to show him that we were pleased that he chose England and to show him St George's Park," Hodgson said. "We wanted to induct him into England and the England way.

"[FA technical director] Dan [Ashworth] said to me: 'What about [Grealish] training with the team and I said: "Yeah, that would be fine. He could train with us.'

"We often have young players training with us. It wouldn't have been a problem but Tim made it clear that wasn't a good idea.

"As far as he was concerned he needed the boy to do some more training because he missed the preseason."

Mindful of Aston Villa's poor standing in the league, and Grealish's injury troubles, Hodgson accepted Sherwood's decision.

"It is no problem to us," Hodgson said. "I'm fully aware and accept that, for Aston Villa, this two weeks is a very important time for him and it's certainly more important for him to get the training he needs under his belt."

Hodgson was adamant he had given no assurances to the young midfielder about being called up to the squad for the November friendlies against Spain and France.

"I was keen to point out to him and his father that there are no guarantees. The only way he will get into the squad is if he is one of the best 23," Hodgson said. "We can't offer him any sweeteners or bonuses because you have made a decision to play for England."

There was no opportunity to pick Hodgson's brain on the fact that Grealish was pictured sprawled on the floor in Tenerife with a packet of cigarettes next to his head in the summer.

Before the matter was raised, he had already declared he would not discuss Grealish any further.

"I must confess that I would much prefer to talk about the players who are actually selected to play for England," Hodgson said.

Uncapped duo Dele Alli and Danny Ings have been included in the 24-man party for England's final two Euro 2016 qualifiers.

Alli's call-up is the most eye-catching given that he was playing League One football for MK Dons last season.

Hodgson and his assistant Ray Lewington, whose son Dean captains MK Dons, have watched Alli almost 30 times between them over the last two years and they have been pleased with what they have seen.

"We think going forward if he continues his rate of progress he could be very interesting for us," Hodgson said of the 19-year-old. "I think I have quite a good basis and track record of giving these players a chance and not being let down by them.

"It makes it easier to make a decision when you see someone else who has great talent."

Hodgson admits he has been forced to cast his net further because of a lack of depth in the country.

"The choice these days is more limited and will continue to be so," he said.

Daniel Sturridge was left out of the squad even though he is back in the Liverpool team following a five-month injury lay-off.

Hodgson conceded there was a slim chance he could be called up for either the home qualifier against Estonia on Oct. 9 or the trip to Lithuania three days later, if he lost key players to injury this weekend.

He said: "We don't have that many options. If a couple of players went down I might have to call him and say 'Daniel, I'm sorry, we need you and we might have to cut short what you were doing.'"

If they beat Estonia and Lithuania, England will have won all 10 qualifiers. They guaranteed their place at Euro 2016 after beating San Marino last month.
