Jack Wilshere: Five-second fury rule makes England horrible opponents

Jack Wilshere believes England are becoming a "horrible team to play against" after quickly banishing the memories of their early World Cup exit.

Wayne Rooney's second-half free kick was enough to secure a 1-0 victory over Estonia on Sunday and uphold England's perfect start to Euro 2016 qualifying in Group E with three wins from three.

Wilshere, 22, has revealed the Three Lions have developed a policy to try to win the ball back quickly if they lose possession, and thinks their recent form shows they have taken strides forward under Roy Hodgson.

"We're trying to become better as a team. On the pitch and off the pitch we are really close -- on the pitch we are starting to become a horrible team to play against," Wilshere said.

"We've got a great, compact unit there in the middle, we get after the ball and we win it. We talk about the 'five-second fury' -- when we lose it, go get it back. We are starting to do those things.

"It is credit to the manager and his coaching staff that the World Cup is consigned to history. The first meet-up after the World Cup, we went through it and that was it.

"Maybe the game against Switzerland [2-0 win last month] helped where people didn't expect us to do much but we went there and showed we have still got the quality that is required for this level.

"We have pushed on from that game now and we are looking forward. We are taking each game as it comes and we'll look forward to the next ones."

Wilshere believes he is improving in his duties at the base of the midfield diamond formation being deployed by Hodgson, and has been watching videos of Andrea Pirlo and Xabi Alonso as he tries to perfect the role.

"I said after the Switzerland game I am only going to get better in this role," he added. "It is a little bit difficult because I don't play it for my club.

"I am used to playing a different role but that's what I spoke about after the Switzerland game, doing your homework, watching players who play in that role and learning from them. I am feeling better and better as each game goes on."
