Roy Hodsgon: England players must train despite Daniel Sturridge injury

Roy Hodgson has denied there are any problems with England's training methods as he was forced to leave out Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge for the forthcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino and Estonia.

The 25-year-old forward has been absent for club and country since suffering a thigh injury on international duty on Sept 5., leading to a public discussion over his absence -- particularly from Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers.

The striker's injury status came to a head when Rodgers confirmed he had asked the Three Lions coach to leave Sturridge out of his latest squad -- and while Hodgson played down any criticisms of their training methods, he admitted his coaching team would look into it.

"We're very disappointed about [Sturridge's absence] but it's obviously something we will consider going forward," Hodgson told a news conference on Thursday.

"But the other thing people do need to consider is that we have such a shortage of time and on this particular occasion we had two days to try and hone a very different way of playing.

"Strangely enough, Danny was a very important part of that because we wanted him and Wayne Rooney to play as split strikers and he had a lot of experience of playing that from his Liverpool time, so it was very unfortunate.

"But if I'm going to be put under pressure in future to give every player two days off every time we play, then we won't train at all quite frankly, because we don't have enough time prematch and postmatch."

England host San Marino on Oct. 9 before travelling to face Estonia three days later after picking up two wins from their first two Euro 2016 qualifiers.

The Three Lions have also announced they will make a trip to Italy to face the Azzurri on March 31 next year, with the venue for the friendly to be confirmed at a later date.
