Luke Shaw omitted from Roy Hodgson's England squad

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has been named in the England under-21 squad to face Croatia, meaning he has been omitted from Roy Hodgson's senior party.

Shaw, 19, who was preferred to Ashley Cole for a place in the Three Lions' World Cup squad, is in Gareth Southgate's group for the two-legged playoff, which will be played at Wolves' Molineux ground on Oct. 10 and then in Vinkovci four days later.

Shaw, who is the most expensive teenager in world football, suffered a hamstring injury in the summer and has only made one competitive appearance for United since completing his 27 million-pound move from Southampton.

Arsenal defender Calum Chambers, who made his full England debut against Norway in September, also drops down to the under-21 squad to give them a greater chance of qualifying for next summer's European Championships.

In-form West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino, who has scored four Premier League goals already this season, is also selected by Southgate, meaning he will have to wait a little longer for his full international debut.

England are without the injured trio of striker Danny Ings and midfielders Nathaniel Chalobah and James Ward-Prowse so there is a first call-up for Chelsea's Lewis Baker and a recall for his Blues teammate Patrick Bamford, who is currently on loan at Middlesbrough.

Squad: Goalkeepers: Jonathan Bond (Watford), Jack Butland (Stoke), Sam Johnstone (Manchester United).

Defenders: Calum Chambers (Arsenal), Eric Dier (Tottenham), Luke Garbutt (Everton), Ben Gibson (Middlesbrough), Carl Jenkinson (West Ham), Michael Keane (Burnley), Jamaal Lascelles (Nottingham Forest), Liam Moore (Leicester), Luke Shaw (Manchester United).

Midfielders: Lewis Baker (Chelsea), Tom Carroll (Swansea), Jake Forster-Caskey (Brighton), Will Hughes (Derby), Thomas Ince (Hull), Alex Pritchard (Brentford), Nathan Redmond (Norwich).

Forwards: Patrick Bamford (Middlesbrough), Saido Berahino (West Brom), Harry Kane (Tottenham), Cauley Woodrow (Fulham).
