Calum Chambers among new names in England squad

England manager Roy Hodgson has called up the uncapped Calum Chambers, Jack Colback, Danny Rose and Fabian Delph for the Euro 2016 qualifier against Switzerland and the friendly against Norway next month, the Football Association has announced.

- Palmer: Lampard ends England duty with dignity
- Brewin: Wilshere needs to step up

Tottenham full-back Rose and midfielders Delph of Aston Villa and Colback of Newcastle United are all 24 years old, while Arsenal defender Chambers is just 19.

Hodgson said he had been following Chambers for some time and had spoken to Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger about the player before making the decision.

"I had a long chat with Arsene and just checked with him that we weren't pushing Chambers ahead too quickly, or just asking something from him that he wasn't capable of accepting at such a young age," Hodgson told reporters.

"Arsene told me that he is ready to take on any challenge you give him, so I'm delighted. I wanted to select him. It does mean he jumps over the under-21 team, which is not an ideal situation, but with 10 injuries to contend with and six of those in the defensive part of the field, I didn't have the luxury of giving him an easy start with the U-21 team.

"I have been very impressed with his start at Arsenal, but that isn't where he first impressed me. He impressed me last season at Southampton, where he played at right-back. I thought he did exceptionally well there.

"He played a good couple of months at right back and I thought this player looks very, very interesting, but of course Arsene must have been following him more closely to buy him and he's had a magnificent start with Arsenal."

On Colback, Hodgson -- who managed Italy legend Andrea Pirlo at Inter Milan -- said: "I've seen him called 'the Ginger Pirlo' in some places. We'd be delighted if he could be as good as that."

"I was impressed with him last year at Sunderland and felt he did very well," said Hodgson of Colback. "Then he got the move to Newcastle and we have followed him in the first two games of the season.

"He has got an awful lot to offer and is a very talented player. We have lost three important midfielders in [Steven] Gerrard, [Frank] Lampard and [Michael Carrick] and he plays in a position where vacancies can arrive.

"I was quite impressed that someone who knows him well called him the 'Ginger Pirlo.' I'd be delighted if that epithet turned out to be the correct one."

Everton's John Stones, who was on the standby list for the 2014 World Cup squad, is also included, while Tottenham winger Andros Townsend makes his return to the fold after injury.

"We want to give younger players a chance to play," he added. "Those players who we feel have a great career in front of them.

"To some extent that has been forced upon us due to retirements, but we have to hope that these young players accept the responsibility of doing it not only for their club side but also doing it in the England team, where the scrutiny is much greater."

Hodgson has continued his policy of bringing through young players, which he introduced before England's disappointing World Cup campaign in Brazil, although 32-year-old Liverpool striker Rickie Lambert has kept his place.

Following the international retirements of former captain Steven Gerrard and fellow midfielder Frank Lampard, forward Wayne Rooney is the squad's most experienced player at international level and Hodgson has confirmed the Manchester United man will lead the side.
