Sunderland manager David Moyes hopes his side can build momentum following their 2-1 win at QPR in the third round of the EFL Cup.
A brace from Paddy McNair saw the Black Cats through to the fourth round after they had fallen behind on the hour mark through a volley from QPR midfielder Sandro.
Sunderland will face Southampton at St Mary's in the next round and Moyes is hoping it will give his players confidence.
He said: "We want to get a bit of momentum going. I hope it's the start of a run of games which gives us a bit of confidence and we get that winning feeling in the club.
"It was a good result for us. The players have been really resilient, they work really hard but I would like them to be more aggressive.
"There is a little bit, it still isn't the way I want it but we need to use this and build on it.
"We need to go into the next games showing what we can do and play better.
"Tonight was the first win, it is not going to change the season but I am going to use it to get us moving up the league.''
It was thought that McNair was bought as a defender when he signed from Manchester United in the summer, but Moyes is keen to move him further up the pitch.
"There is some misconception with his position. He is an attacking midfielder, he started as a boy as a No. 10," Moyes added.
"He is very much an attacking midfielder. We have seen in training he is a good finisher.
"I believe he is better moving up the pitch and tonight was good for him. I think he will go on to be a really good buy for us but he needs a bit of developing.''
QPR manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was upbeat despite the defeat, believing there were a lot of positives to take out of the game.
He said: "Firstly, I think it was a brilliant game. Secondly, I am proud of my players.
"We scored a good goal, we always knew at 75 minutes that certain players would run out of steam.
"I think we were unlucky with the first goal, we always knew it was going to be a difficult game.
"I wanted to try to win, my players tried. Let's not forget we played with a young left-back and a very young right-back [Niko Hamalainen and Osman Kakay] and they were magnificent.
"We knew they would be tired and that showed, but I am proud of them.
"If we are going to lose, this is the way to do it. We had grit and we were almost there.''
