Adama Diomande brace against Exeter puts Hull City into EFL Cup third round

Hull's first-team coach Stephen Clemence was full of praise for Adama Diomande after he fired the Premier League team to an EFL Cup second-round 3-1 win at League Two Exeter.

The Grecians, conquerors of Brentford in round one, threatened an upset when Jake Taylor put them in front with a stunning 25-yard strike, but their joy was short lived as Diomande equalised within 60 seconds.

He added a second slightly against the run of play after 77 minutes before Robert Snodgrass killed the game off by curling in a free kick nine minutes from time.

"It always helps when you equalise so soon after going behind and it was a good goal by Dio,'' Clemence said.

"He got himself two goals and did well tonight.

"It's what we've been trying to get him to do, come inside and get in that little hole, and the ball went wide, he made the run and scored.

"The second one was a good goal as well, so he's done well tonight and it was also a great free kick by Rob.

"This isn't an easy place to come and they have taken a few down recently. They have some very good players and played well.

"The downside was that a couple of the younger players picked up injuries. Greg Luer injured his knee and Josh Tymon had a kick on his shins, so he will have an X-ray tomorrow, but the good news was that Harry Maguire came through 90 minutes, which he hasn't had all preseason.''

Exeter boss Paul Tisdale was pleased his side were able to hold their heads high against the top-tier club.

"There's no shame in the result. We played particularly well I thought and it took one or two very good goals to beat us,'' Tisdale said.

"It is always hard to be happy when you've lost, but generally speaking, I thought we conducted ourselves very nicely.

"I thought it was a good atmosphere, our fans supported the team and I think the team did themselves justice. Ultimately we were beaten by a couple of very good goals.

"We had some very good chances, Ryan Harley after a very good breakaway was probably the pick of those, and it would be unfair to say that we just defended, had one chance and scored from it.

"We actually had numerous opportunities by stealing the ball off Hull and breaking away and could easily have scored a second goal. While the game was 1-1, or 2-1, we had a chance, but the third goal ultimately killed us.''
