Aston Villa dumped out of EFL Cup by League Two Luton Town; QPR advance

Aston Villa will have more time and energy to focus on their Championship promotion bid after making an early exit from the EFL Cup at the hands of League Two Luton Town.

Earlier on Wednesday the recently relegated club's new owner Dr Tony Xia revealed his mission to lead Villa to European dominance in five years' time, and he will have been left unimpressed by their first advance as Roberto Di Matteo's men responded by losing 3-1 at Luton in the first round of the League Cup.

The results means Villa, beaten by Sheffield Wednesday in their league opener, will be absent from the second-round draw for the first time in years.

Jordan Ayew's 13th-minute opener put Villa on the right track at Kenilworth Road but Luton were level by half-time as Jake Gray fired home a stunning strike in the 35th minute.

Cameron McGeehan boosted the Hatters into the lead eight minutes from close range after the restart, leaving Jores Okore to compound Villa's misery with a 66th-minute own goal - his poor attempt to clear the ball following a short corner found the inside of Mark Bunn's near post.

Leeds beat Fleetwood on penalties to deny former boss Uwe Rosler an upset in the first round.

Substitute Marcus Antonsson spared Leeds' blushes with a late equaliser which took the game to extra-time, before the Sky Bet Championship side won a tense penalty shoot-out 5-4.

Burton needed extra time before finally overcoming Bury 3-2.

Calum Butcher and Stuart Beavon scored in the additional half an hour to finally break the resistance of League One Bury, who equalised through Tom Pope after Callum Reilly had put the hosts ahead as it finished 1-1 after 90 minutes at the Pirelli Stadium.

Niall Maher's first professional goal in the 120th minute made it a nervy finale but Burton progressed.

Matt Ingram was the hero as QPR needed penalties to see off League One side Swindon to reach the second round.

The goalkeeper saved two spot kicks before Nasser El Khayati converted to take the Championship team through following a 2-2 draw after extra-time.

Ingram pushed Anton Rodgers' penalty on to the bar and saved from Bradley Barry to seal a 4-2 success.
