Oleg Blokhin resigns at Dynamo

KIEV, Ukraine -- Former Ukraine coach Oleg Blokhin has resigned from his job in charge of Dynamo Kiev following a 2-0 loss to bitter rivals Shakhtar Donetsk in the domestic league.

The 61-year-old former Dynamo and Soviet striker stepped down after 18 months at the helm following the game late on Wednesday, leaving the club seven points behind league leader Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk.

Dynamo president Igor Surkis accepted his resignation "for the club's poor results."

Following his appointment in September 2012, Blokhin briefly continued to coach the national team. But a month later he underwent a minimally invasive heart operation and quit the Ukraine job. He led the national team to the 2006 World Cup quarterfinals, the farthest any post-Soviet team has advanced in the tournament.
