New Man Utd star Memphis Depay keen to link up with boxing fan Rooney

Memphis Depay says that he can't wait to link up with Wayne Rooney at Manchester United and discuss their mutual love of boxing.

Depay, 21, will join United this summer from PSV Eindhoven for around €30 million and is a big fan of boxing, with a full-size boxing ring set up at his luxury apartment in Holland.

Rooney was recorded earlier this year being knocked out by Stoke defender Phil Bardsley during a play fight in his kitchen and then celebrated his goal the following day in the 3-0 beating of Tottenham by re-enacting the moment.

"United have a lot of big players, but I look forward to playing with every player, and, of course, Wayne Rooney," he told the Sun. "He's a huge player. Of course, I want to play with him. I'm looking forward to it. And I cannot wait to talk boxing with Wayne. Maybe we will have some fun."

Dutch international Depay will again link up with former manager Louis van Gaal, but insists he is not expecting to just walk into the team.

"There are no promises you are going to play in a big club," he said. "I have to fight. I like to fight for my place. It's going to be tough, but I believe in myself."

The winger also revealed his favoured position, although revealed his flexibility.

"Left wing of a front three is my strongest position," he added. "I like that position. The [PSV] coach Phillip Cocu gave me the freedom to sometimes go in the middle so I can give space for the left-back. But I can also play on the right side or as a No 10."
