Harry Redknapp becomes Derby County's football advisor

Derby County have announced the appointment of Harry Redknapp as a "football advisor."

Redknapp, who was quoted in The Sun saying he is set to manage Jordan for two World Cup qualifiers this month, takes on the role with immediate effect.

Derby, currently fifth in the Championship, are eager to secure promotion this season after losing the 2014 playoff final to Redknapp's Queens Park Rangers side and then narrowly missing out on the playoffs under Steve McClaren last season.

The club appointed Paul Clement, who had worked as Carlo Ancelotti's assistant at Real Madrid, in the summer but he was sacked in February after a run of seven games without a win, with academy director Darren Wassall then handed the reins until the end of the season.

The Rams hope Redknapp will be able to provide guidance as they seek a successful conclusion to the campaign.

"This is a great opportunity for me and the rest of the coaches to work with somebody of Harry's experience for the remainder of the season," Wassall said on the club's official website.

Sam Rush, Derby's president and chief executive, added: "As we move into the closing stages of the season, we feel that Harry's know-how will be valuable to us. He brings a high level of awareness and understanding of the Championship promotion race."

Redknapp said he had been convinced to take the role by Derby chairman Mel Morris.

"From the first conversation I had with the chairman it was clear he has exciting plans for the football club," former Tottenham and Portsmouth boss Redknapp said. "I am delighted to be able to help out and am looking forward to working with Darren and his team."

Morris said: "It is excellent news that Harry has agreed to join us. His experience spans over several decades and he is one of the most knowledgeable and informed figures in the game.

"When I spoke with Harry about the possibility of helping out on a short-term basis, it was evident from the start that he was excited at the prospect of joining us. I am sure he will perfectly complement Darren and the rest of our staff."
