Denmark coach Morten Olsen resigned after Denmark failed to qualify for Euro 2016 on Tuesday.
Olsen's 15-year reign ended after the Danes' 4-3 aggregate defeat to Sweden in their playoff.
Late headers from Yussuf Poulsen and Jannik Vestergaard ensured Denmark at least claimed a 2-2 draw on the night, but it was not enough to prevent Olsen from saying farewell.
"I have informed the players that the DBU and I have agreed that there is no point in continuing," Olsen said.
"Of course, it hurts to end this way after more than 35 years [as a player and coach] but I feel most sorry for the Danes, for the fans. That has the largest importance to me. I feel a bit empty with regards to the match."
The 66-year-old managed Denmark in four major international tournaments, and was the longest-serving international manager on the continent.
"I have been privileged with the people I have been working with. I have had many good colleagues. I am extremely grateful for that," he said.
"I will leave it to others to decide if that is good enough, but of course it is a failure every time you do not qualify. I feel sorry for the players and for the Danes in general."
It was also confirmed that defender Lars Jacobsen would retire after achieving his 80th cap in Copenhagen.
