D.C. United agreed to an extension with head coach Ben Olsen through 2021, according to a Washington Post report on Friday night.

Olsen was set to enter the final year of his contract before the agreement.

Olsen, 41, has spent eight full seasons leading D.C., the second-longest tenure of any current MLS coach (Sporting KC's Peter Vermes, nine). He has been with the club for 23 years in some capacity, having played for United from 1998 to 2009 before becoming an assistant in 2010 and taking over as interim head coach eight months later.

Ben Olsen
D.C. United have reportedly extended Ben Olsen's contract through to 2021.

D.C. has gone 98-118-68 overall under Olsen, but the team has reached the playoffs in five of eight seasons, including four of the last five. Olsen won MLS Coach of the Year honors in 2014 when United went 17-9-8, a year after finishing 3-24-7.

This year, they made a late run to the postseason, finishing with a 14-11-9 record. D.C. lost on penalties to Columbus in a knockout-round game at home.
