D.C. United goalkeeper Bill Hamid to miss six weeks after knee surgery

D.C. United goalkeeper Bill Hamid will miss the next six weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee to repair damage to his lateral meniscus, the club announced on Wednesday.

The recovery period means Hamid is in danger of missing D.C. United's opener against Sporting Kansas City on March 4. Travis Worra is expected to take Hamid's place if the U.S international is unable to play.

The announcement marks the second consecutive year that Hamid has been injured during the offseason.

Last year, Hamid sustained a similar injury to the same knee, and missed the first 12 games of the regular season.

According to The Washington Post, Hamid was injured during workouts while preparing to take part in the annual January camp for the U.S. national team.

Hamid officially withdrew from the camp on Jan. 10, and upon further examination by U.S. medical staff, Hamid opted to have surgery, which was performed on Monday.

Also on Thursday, D.C. announced it had re-signed midfielder Jared Jeffrey, who had been out of contract after making 21 appearances last year in his fourth season with the club.
