D.C. United acquires Jose Guillermo Ortiz on loan from Herediano

Jose Guillermo Ortiz will spend the 2017 season with D.C. United in Major League Soccer after the team acquired him on a season-long loan from Costa Rican club Herediano.

Ortiz, 24, can play multiple positions in the front line and United general manager Dave Kasper is hoping the former Alajuelense player's energy and movement will create problems for opposing MLS teams.

The Costa Rica native scored 15 goals last season with Alajuelense before moving to Herediano ahead of the loan move to D.C. United.

"Jose is coming off a very good year in 2016 and we are very pleased to have secured his services in a one-year loan," Kasper said in a statement released by the club. "His energy and movement create problems for opposing defenses, and he has a nose for the goal. We welcome Jose to the D.C. United family and we look forward to having him joining us in preseason training camp in January."

D.C. United got an up-close look at Ortiz in the quarterfinals of the 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League, when the striker scored twice in Alajuelense's 5-2 win against their MLS rivals.
