Alvaro Saborio has announced his departure from Major League Soccer side D.C. United.

The Costa Rica international forward took to Twitter to make the announcement, thanking the club's fans for his two-season spell in the nation's capital.

"I want to announce that not I will continue being part of D.C. United," tweeted Saborio . "Thanks to all the fans of this club, a beautiful two years passed here!"

Saborio, 34, was acquired by the Black-and-Red in the middle of the 2015 campaign from Real Salt Lake, but this year found himself second on the depth chart behind Patrick Mullins.

In MLS, Saborio scored a total of 89 goals in 192 league, playoff, and cup appearances, and was named the league's Newcomer of the Year in 2010.

He was part of the RSL sides that reached three major finals, but never could make a breakthrough. Saborio did win two league titles with Costa Rican side Saprissa, as well as a 2005 CONCACAF Champions League title with club. He was also part of the Sion side that won the 2009 Swiss Cup.

At international level, Saborio scored 35 goals in 105 appearances for Costa Rica, appearing in the 2006 World Cup, but missed the 2014 edition through injury.
