D.C. United have been forced to delay their scheduled MLS match against the Portland Timbers by an hour because of "excessive heat."

The game had been set to kick off at 7 p.m. ET but that has now been pushed back to 8 p.m. as temperatures in Washington reached almost 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Saturday afternoon.

Since Portland joined Major League Soccer in 2011, D.C. has drawn once and lost once against the Timbers. United has drawn its previous two games in MLS this season.

"We can't keep getting ties," United defender Steve Birnbaum told the United website before the game. "We have to figure out a way to get wins at home."
