Petr Cech to decide on international retirement in coming weeks

Petr Cech will decide in the coming weeks whether to retire from internationals after Czech Republic were eliminated early from Euro 2016.

The Arsenal goalkeeper was playing in his fifth major tournament but couldn't prevent the Czechs from finishing last in Group D with one point.

Cech, who had previously said he may retire from the national team after the tournament, says he still hasn't made up his mind but expects to make a decision within two weeks.

"Nothing has changed compared to what I said at the start of preparations. Once I've gotten over the current disappointment, I will sit down and think about what to do," Cech told Czech website iSport.

"I'll try to decide as soon as possible because of the start of the new [World Cup] qualifiers, so that the coach knows in advance."

The 34-year-old Cech, who made his national team debut in 2002 and has more than 120 caps, said the disappointing results in France will not have an impact on his decision.

"The outcome of the tournament for me does not play a role," he said. "My decision will not depend on how we finished, but how I feel."

In March, Cech said it was getting harder to cope with the gruelling travel schedule that comes with playing internationals, and that his club career could benefit from quitting the national team.

"I'm turning 34 and it's time for me to consider it [retirement]," he said at the time. "The other day I thought: Isn't it time after 14 years on the national team to think about bringing this chapter of your life to a close?

"The less I have to travel around and play for the national team, the higher the probability that I'll be able to retain my focus at Arsenal. After all, I'm not getting any younger."

Czech Republic striker David Lafata and midfielder Jaroslav Plasil both announced their own international retirements on Tuesday.
