Niko Kovac sacked by Croatia amid Euro 2016 qualification struggle

Croatia have sacked head coach Niko Kovac with two group matches of their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign remaining.

Kovac was removed following a 0-0 draw with Azerbaijan and 2-0 loss to Norway that left Croatia in third place in Group H.

A statement on the Croatian Football Federation's official Twitter feed said: "HNS Executive Committee decided to part ways with head coach Niko Kovac after results in Baku and Oslo. #EuropeanQualifiers.

"Search for a new head coach will be led by president Davor Suker and technical director Romeo Jozak. New coach is expected by Sept. 21."

Croatia are just one point behind second-placed Norway and three adrift of leaders Italy, with matches against Bulgaria and Malta to come on Oct. 10 and 13 respectively.

They are guaranteed at least third place and a spot in the qualifying playoffs.
