Ex-coach Barry Bennell remanded in custody on child sex abuse charges

Former football coach Barry Bennell has been remanded in custody charged with 12 child sex offences.

Bennell, 63, appeared at South Cheshire Magistrates' Court in Crewe via video link from prison on Monday, accused of seven counts of indecent assault and five counts of buggery.

He will appear at Chester Crown Court on March 22.

Bennell spoke only to confirm his name and age.

The former Crewe Alexandra coach, of no fixed address, now faces 20 sexual abuse allegations.

He has previously pleaded not guilty to seven counts of indecent assault on a boy and one count of attempted buggery.

All the charges will be dealt with together at Chester Crown Court.

The offences he was charged with on Monday relate to alleged incidents between 1980 and 1987, said to have occurred when the complainants were aged between eight and 14.

Eleven of the alleged offences are said to have happened in Derbyshire, while one is said to have taken place in Pwllheli, north Wales.

The new charges relate to three separate complainants.
