River Plate stand in Tigres' way of making Copa Libertadores history

River Plate are through to the finals of the Copa Libertadores after coming through 3-1 aggregate winners in their semifinal with Guarani.

It nearly happened in 2001, when Cruz Azul took Argentina's Boca Juniors all the way to a penalty shootout. There was briefly the threat of it taking place nine years later, when Adolfo Bautista put Chivas Guadalajara ahead in the first leg against Internacional -- only for the Brazilians to hit back and win both games. Tigres UANL rebounded from a first leg defeat at Internacional to reach the Copa Libertadores final.

French striker Andre Gignac opened the scoring for Tigres in the 18th minute, Internacional defender Geferson scored an own goal in the 41st and midfielder Arevalo Rios sealed the victory...

Tigres cruise past Internacional into the Copa Libertadores final

New Tigres signing Andre-Pierre Gignac tormented the Inter defence all night.

There was a touch of late drama in the Copa Libertadores semifinal on Wednesday when Internacional of Brazil, out of the blue, scored a goal in the 88th minute. Another goal would have taken them through to meet Argentina's River Plate in the final. In reality, though, the match was not even close. Tigres of Mexico may have only won 4-3 on aggregate, but there was a significant gulf between the two teams.

The warning signs were there last week in Brazil. Inter had been in continuous action in the...
