Juan Carlos Osorio 'asks for forgiveness from the Mexican people'

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio said sorry to Mexico fans on Saturday after El Tri's heaviest loss ever in an official tournament.

Mexico fell 7-0 to reigning Copa America champion Chile in a historic display by La Roja and one which left El Tri -- one of the pre-tournament favorites -- shell-shocked.

"I want to ask for forgiveness from the Mexican people," said Osorio at the start of the news conference after the game.

"It was an embarrassment. It was a very poor performance from us and I repeat: Many apologies to the Mexican people."

Osorio admitted that he "made mistakes in everything" and said his team attempted to take possession, but failed against a very good Chile side.

"They are fifth in the world for good reason, but I repeat we had a horrible game today," stressed the Colombian coach.

Chile went into the break 2-0 ahead after dominating the first half, but an avalanche of goals fell in La Roja's favor just after, with Eduardo Vargas netting four goals, Edson Puch adding two others and Alexis Sanchez getting on the scoresheet as El Tri crumbled.

Chile moves on to play Colombia in the semifinal on Wednesday in Chicago, with the United States facing Argentina on Tuesday.
