Brazil, Ecuador finish in controversial draw; Peru win to take Group B lead

Brazil and Ecuador finished in a controversial 0-0 Group B draw on day two of the Copa America on Saturday.

Though neither team broke through, both South American teams had plenty of chances in the back-and-forth match.

Philippe Coutinho had two golden opportunities in the first half, with a close-range effort going over the bar and a shot from distance missing wide right of the Ecuador goal.

Ecuador may feel hard done after watching the replay, when a Miller Bolanos cross bounced off goalkeeper Alisson and into the Brazil net. However, the linesman ruled the ball had crossed the end line before the cross and the goal was not counted.

Brazil continues Group B play on June 8 versus Haiti, while Ecuador face current group leaders Peru on the same day.

Paolo Guerrero became Peru's all-time leading goal scorer in giving his team a 1-0 win over Haiti to begin their Copa America campaign on Saturday.

After a tight first half in Seattle, Peru took control after the break and Guerrero scored in the 61st with a diving header to open Group B play.

Guerrero was a challenge for Haiti to contain throughout the game and he finally delivered by diving forward to connect with Edison Flores' cross in the middle of the box for his 27th international goal.

Haiti offered little in response until the final minute of stoppage time, when substitute Kervens Belfort got behind the Peru defence on a free kick but somehow pushed his header wide from point-blank range.

Peru are now in first place in the group after Brazil and Ecuador finished in a draw.

In Group A, Costa Rica and Paraguay shared a testy goalless draw that saw more cards than scoring chances.

In hot conditions in Orlando, the mood was set inside the first 20 seconds when Costa Rica's Yeltsin Tejeda was booked for a foul on Celso Ortiz.

The game's best period of play came immediately afterwards as Benitez was played through into the box but scuffed his shot wide, and Paulo Da Silva's glancing header missed inches wide following a corner.

The teams nearly came to blows after Costa Rica's Kendall Waston fouled Dario Lezcano in the 77th minute, and in the final minute of stoppage time, Waston was sent off for a challenge from behind on Nelson Valdez, ruling him out of their next game against the United States.

Colombia lead Group A with three points following their win on Friday, ahead of Costa Rica and Paraguay with a point apiece and the U.S. at the bottom.
