Brazil vow to fight Barcelona's order to limit Neymar to Olympics in summer

Brazil's football confederation has told Barcelona that it wants to have star striker Neymar available for both the Copa America Centenario in June and the Olympics in August.

Earlier on Friday, Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu sent a letter to the CBF saying the club would release Neymar for only one of those tournaments.

The Barcelona star has said he wishes to play for Brazil in both tournaments, but because the Olympics is not an official FIFA senior tournament, clubs are not obligated to release their players to participate.

In a statement, the CBF said it would continue to try to secure Neymar's release for both events despite Barcelona's instruction.

"The Brazilian football federation received this Friday afternoon a letter signed by Barcelona president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, making clear the position of the club regarding Neymar's participation in the competitions the national team will dispute in the coming months: The Copa America Centenario and the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

"The club accepts the release of the player for only one of the competitions.

"The CFB, through the national team board, will do everything possible to have Neymar Jr. in the Copa America Centenario and the 2016 Olympic games in Rio.

"Neymar Jr. has already publicly announced his desire to participate in both competitions with the national team and we are counting, also, on his efforts with the club."

Bartomeu said last weekend that it would be "impossible to convince us" to allow Neymar to play in both tournaments.

But with Brazil having never won the gold medal, the country is prioritising the Games in Rio de Janeiro over the Copa America Centenario, and a deal must be struck to ensure the presence of the country's top player.

Brazil coach Dunga had travelled to Spain in March to try to convince Barcelona to allow the 24-year-old to play at both events, but Bartomeu said Barcelona's decision has been made.

Also on Friday, Brazil announced a pre-Copa America friendly against Panama to be played outside of Denver on May 29.
