Man United's Antonio Valencia may miss Copa America after surgery

Manchester United's Antonio Valencia could miss the Copa America after undergoing surgery on Monday.

Valencia, 29, was called up to Ecuador's preliminary 30-man squad last week for the tournament in Chile, but posted two pictures on his Instagram account on Monday night with him recovering in a hospital bed.

The Daily Telegraph reports the surgery was needed to remove metal screws and pins in his left ankle, which were inserted during an operation in September 2010 after breaking his leg against Rangers in a Champions League match.

The paper suggests that the recovery period will see Valencia fit to start preseason training at United at the start of July, but miss the South America tournament which runs from June 11 to July 4.

The Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) has called a news conference on Tuesday at 18.30 local time to clarify Valencia's injury.

The deadline for their final 23-man Copa America squad is June 1 as Ecuador kick off their campaign against hosts Chile on June 11, with Mexico and Bolivia completing Group A.

One of the captions accompanying Valencia's Instagram post read: "Thank to God everything went well. And now just thinking about recovery."

Valencia played the full 90 minutes in United's final game of the Premier League season at Hull a day before the operation.

The 29-year-old -- who signed from Wigan as a right-winger in 2009 -- made 32 Premier League appearances last season with Louis van Gaal opting to use him mainly at right-back.
