Gary Medel, MF, Inter Milan & Chile: #CopaRank: No. 24

Welcome to #CopaRank, a weeklong look at the top 25 players we expect to see at the Copa America Centenario. Over 50 ESPN FC experts and writers from across the globe voted, and we're rolling out the results right up to opening day, U.S. vs. Colombia, on June 3.

Why is Gary Medel in the top 25?

Countrymen Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal get more of the acclaim for the defending Copa America champions, but Medel played a crucial role in last summer's title and is one of Serie A's top defensive midfielders. A truly dependable presence sitting in front of the back line, Medel is an excellent passer, reads the game well, and has the bite needed to play his position. What's more, he's matured greatly since a tumultuous stint in Sevilla. Defensive midfielders don't succeed in Serie A without the requisite set of abilities, and Medel has thrived for Inter Milan. The Chilean is versatile, and can slot in as a defender -- often on the fly -- when needed.

What the experts say about Medel:

"Medel is an extraordinary player in front of the defence. He has a heart the size of a house and wins back numerous balls. I think if we didn't have him there, we'd really struggle." -- Inter Milan manager Roberto Mancini, April 2015.

"Gary has so much desire to get the ball off his opponent that every time he goes into a challenge, he puts his whole life into it." -- Former Chile coach Marcelo Bielsa.

Career highlight:

Medel made the team of the tournament at last year's Copa America for his part in helping his team win the trophy at home in Chile. Medel chipped in on the attacking end with a goal against Bolivia and provided the platform Chile needed to allow Sanchez, Vidal and company to shine across the rest of the tournament.

Stat of the season:

Medel led Inter Milan in passing accuracy at 89 percent for the season.

What next for Medel after the Copa America Centenario?

Rumors are swirling that Medel could be due for a return to Argentine giants Boca Juniors this summer. Medel played for Boca from 2009 to 2011, but a move seems like it would be slightly premature with the midfielder having more to offer in Europe.
