Erik Lamela, FW, Spurs & Argentina: #CopaRank: No. 25

Welcome to #CopaRank, a weeklong look at the top 25 players we expect to see at the Copa America Centenario. Over 50 ESPN FC experts and writers from across the globe voted, and we're rolling out the results right up to opening day, U.S. vs. Colombia, on June 3.

Why is Erik Lamela in the top 25?

The Argentine attacker emerged as a key part of Tottenham's team in 2015-16 with his dribbling ability, speed and eye for a dangerous pass. Lamela's 11 goals in all competitions put him second on the team behind Harry Kane, and he contributed nine assists in league play as well.

Lamela remains frustratingly inconsistent at times, but his talent is undeniable. Able to play across the midfield, he is most often deployed on the right, a position from which he prefers to cut inside and pressure retreating defenders -- though he's no slouch with a cross. He's also willing to do the defense work needed at the highest levels.

What the experts say about Lamela:

"We expect a lot from him -- he's an unbelievable player. He needs to show us that he deserves to play, but at the moment we are happy with his performance." -- Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, July 2014.

"We've seen a big improvement from him this season, and it's not just his goals, it's his assists and work rate. He looks stronger, and the manager's got a big part to play in that." -- Former Tottenham player Ledley King, April 2016.

Career highlight:

Lamela's performance in a resounding 4-1 win by Tottenham over Manchester City in September stands out as his professional highlight to date. The Argentine was superb throughout, providing an assist and finishing off the opposition with the capping goal in a brilliant attacking showing. It was the game that convinced Spurs fans that Lamela was turning a corner.

Stat of the season:

Lamela committed the second-most fouls in the Premier League in 2015-16 with 66.

What next for Lamela after the Copa America Centenario?

Lamela has stated his intentions to stay on at Spurs for at least one more season, despite transfer speculation swirling around him. Bedding in at Tottenham was no easy task for the Argentine, and now that he's coming good, it's worth asking if another move would benefit him at all.
