Giovani dos Santos to sit out Mexico-U.S. CONCACAF Cup with injury

LA Galaxy attacker Giovani dos Santos is injured and will not play for Mexico at Saturday's CONCACAF Cup, coach Ricardo "Tuca" Ferretti confirmed on Monday.

"Gio has a muscular problem and can't be with us," Ferretti said during Monday's news conference.

Mexico later announced that Club America's Javier Guemez would replace Dos Santos on the quad to face the United States at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

The Galaxy later confirmed that Dos Santos suffered a muscle strain in Sunday night's 1-1 draw at the Seattle Sounders, in which he played 87 minutes on CenturyLink Field's artificial surface.

Dos Santos has three goals and four assists in eight MLS starts for the Galaxy since moving from Villarreal in Spain this summer.

Mexico faces the United States on Saturday in a one-match playoff to determine the lone spot from CONCACAF at the 2017 Confederations Cup.

Earlier on Monday, Ferretti announced the final 23-man roster, including both Andres Guardado and Rafa Marquez, who had earlier been injury doubts.

However, he specified that he is still deliberating whether Marquez will finally make the trip.

"Guardado played [over the weekend] and from Rafa I have good news, if he is fit he will be among the 23," Ferretti said.

El Tri will have double training sessions this week until the team travels to Pasadena on Thursday.
