Chivas' Jair Pereira, Toronto FC and Club America handed CONCACAF fines

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- Chivas defender Jair Pereira was given a two-match suspension by CONCACAF, while Toronto FC and Club America were also fined.

Pereira, 31, will miss the second leg of the Champions League semifinal against the New York Red Bulls on Tuesday, with his team leading 1-0 after Wednesday's first leg in Guadalajara.

CONCACAF said Friday its disciplinary committee penalized Pereira for "an act of physical aggression against an opponent, while the ball was not in play" for an incident in the 84th minute. Video showed Pereira with his hands around the neck of Red Bulls midfielder Sean Davis.

The federation also fined Toronto and Club America for "general team misconduct" during a tunnel confrontation at half-time of Toronto's 3-1 home win in the first leg on Tuesday.

CONCACAF did not announce the fine amounts for either club, but said in a statement: "After due examination of the evidence gathered during their investigation and based on the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League Regulations, and the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the Committee determined that Toronto FC and Club America clearly infringed the Competition Regulations, specifically Art. 52 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code which covers team conduct.

"In levying the fines for general team misconduct during the halftime of Tuesday's semifinal match in Toronto, the Committee expressed that it considers the clubs' conduct unacceptable, as it departs from the principles of Fair Play."

Toronto plays its second leg away to Club America on Wednesday at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
