CCL: Pumas fends off Honduras Progreso; Saprissa cruise

Liga MX club Pumas were up to the task at home on Thursday night, securing a 2-0 win against Honduras Progreso in CONCACAF Champions League Group A play.

The visitors kept it interesting until the 65th minute when Eduardo Herrera found the opener for Pumas, lashing home from the center of the penalty area following an assist from Pablo Barrera.

The hosts doubled the lead in injury time when Fidel Martinez's pass to Saul Berjon was tidily slotted home to the top right corner of Woodrow West's goal.

Pumas now have a stranglehold on the top spot in the group after an opening win versus W Connection FC.

Earlier in the day, Suchitepequez left it late but found an injury time winner to beat Real Esteli in Group G action.

Kevin Ruiz did the honours for the hosts with a free kick from distance that found its way into the top left corner of Esteli's goal.

Saprissa ran roughshod over CD Dragon in Group B, with the Costa Rican club cruising to a 6-0 win against its Salvadorian opponents.

Rolando Blackburn's brace paced the hosts, with the first of his two goals coming in the fourth minute and counting as both the opener and the winner.

Francisco Calvo, Marvin Angulo, Mariano Torresi and substitute Ulises Segura all added goals against a Dragon side that finished with 10 men.

Saprissa are tied with MLS club Portland Timbers atop the group.
