Santos beats Saprissa to make CCL quarterfinals; America, RSL advance

Three teams secured spots in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday, with Liga MX club Santos Laguna earning an important 6-1 victory against Saprissa to win Group A in the region's top club tournament.

Bryan Rabello opened the scoring for Santos, who are also making a charge up the Liga MX table at the moment. Minor Escoe levelled for the visiting Costa Rican club early in the second half, but after that it was all Santos.

The five-goal run included goals from Djaniny, Luis Mendoza, Carlos Izquierdoz, Diego Gonzalez and Jesus Alonso Escoboza.

Club America had virtually wrapped up Group E barring a huge defeat to Motagua. The Hondurans led for most of the match following a goal Erick Andino in the 16th minute.

Motagua's Marvin Barrios was sent off in the 73rd minute, which allowed America to turn up the pressure and find the equaliser through Michael Arroyo in the 88th minute.

Major League Soccer's Real Salt Lake beat Municipal 1-0 thanks to a goal in the 43rd minute from Jamison Olave.

Municipal would have needed to beat its MLS opponent by at least three goals to win Group G, but Kyle Beckerman and his teammates prevailed at home to move on in the competition.

All three teams await the completion of group play, which wraps up with three games on Thursday, to see who they'll face in the quarterfinals.
