Crew SC picks up contract options on Higuain, Meram and Trapp

Columbus Crew SC has announced that contract options on three players -- Federico Higuain, Justin Meram and Wil Trapp -- have been exercised.

Higuain is a two-time club MVP award winner and his 35 career goals rank him fifth on the club's all-time scoring list. In 2016, the 32-year-old had four goals and four assists.

Meram was Columbus' MVP in 2016 after a season in which he scored five goals and added 13 assists. He is currently the club's longest-tenured player, having been drafted in 2011.

Trapp started 29 games in 2016 and was named to the MLS All-Star team.

"We are glad to have Federico, Justin and Wil back for 2017 as they have been important pieces of our club in their time here," said Crew SC coach Gregg Berhalter. "Each of them continues to play a key role in our system and we look forward to their continued contributions on and off the field next season."
