MLS veteran Conor Casey signs with Columbus Crew SC

Columbus Crew SC have signed free agent forward Conor Casey, the MLS club announced on Tuesday.

Casey, 34, is sixth among active players with 71 MLS goals in the regular season.

He will join the MLS Cup finalists to add depth behind star striker Kei Kamara, who has yet to report to training camp amid a reported contract dispute.

Casey started his career in Germany with Borussia Dortmund before moving to Mainz in 2004. He then joined MLS in 2007 and won MLS Cup with Colorado in 2010.

He played the last three seasons with the Philadelphia Union, though he made only two starts last year.

"We are pleased to add Conor Casey to our squad," Crew SC coach Gregg Berhalter said in a statement. "He is an MLS Cup champion and in addition to his invaluable amount of experience in this League and in Germany, Conor brings proven goal-scoring ability and a high level of soccer intelligence."

Casey has made 19 international appearances from the United States, the last coming in 2010.
