Corey Ashe signs free-agent deal with Columbus Crew SC

Veteran defender Corey Ashe has signed a free agent contract with Columbus Crew SC, the MLS club announced on Friday.

Ashe, 29, entered the league with the Houston Dynamo in their MLS Cup season in 2007 and made over 200 appearances for the club until being traded to Orlando this past July.

"We would like to thank Corey for choosing Columbus Crew SC," coach Gregg Berhalter said in a club statement. "He is a dynamic full-back who has played a big role on successful teams throughout his tenure in this League.

"He has won an MLS Cup, has played in two more and will provide veteran leadership and experience to our backline. We feel that Corey will be an ideal fit for our system."

Ashe said he found the prospect of joining this past season's MLS Cup runners-up "enticing."

"The team obviously has a lot of success, a lot of good players, and a big component was the coaching staff," Ashe said. "I am familiar with all of them. I have played against both Josh [Wolff] and Gregg, and I have played with Pat [Onstad]. That was a big deciding factor, the coaching staff."

The left-back was a member of the United States squad that won the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup, but he has yet to appear in a game for the national team.
