Ex-Colombia captain Mario Yepes retires from football

Former Colombia team captain Mario Alberto Yepes officially announced his retirement on Wednesday, putting an end to a career of more than 20 years and nine clubs.

"I would like to thank all the people who have supported me as a player and now I will look on the horizon for opportunities that may arise," Yepes said during a news conference in Cali.

Yepes saw action with Cali, River, Nantes, PSG, Chievo, Milan, Atalanta and San Lorenzo as well as being capped 102 times with the national team.

Despite currently being under contract for San Lorenzo in Colombia, Yepes said that turning 40 this past Jan. 13 was one factor in his decision.

Yepes had several offers from other clubs in Colombia and beyond, but reports in Colombia say the retirement was accelerated due to an offer to return to the national team -- this time as an assistant to manager Jose Pekerman.
