Second-half goals from James Chester and substitute Scott Hogan gave Aston Villa a 2-0 Sky Bet Championship victory at the DW Stadium that pushes Wigan closer to relegation.

The hosts were being led for the first time by interim boss Graham Barrow, but were unable to improve on their miserable home form that contributed to Warren Joyce losing his job at the start of the week.

Wigan should have been ahead inside 15 minutes, but, after reading a short back pass from Mile Jedinak, Omar Bogle could only...

Cardiff's Neil Warnock: Wigan were not a threat under Warren Joyce

Neil Warnock has guided Cardiff to 13th place in the Championship table.

Cardiff boss Neil Warnock has said he did not consider Wigan to be a "threat" once they appointed manager Warren Joyce in November.

Former Manchester United under-21 boss Joyce was sacked on Monday after winning only six of his 24 games in charge at the DW Stadium.

Cardiff are currently 13th in the Championship but were a point above the drop zone, and Wigan, in 21st when Joyce took charge.

"No disrespect but when Wigan appointed him, I was delighted," Warnock told BBC Sport. "I didn't think they...

Warren Joyce sacked by Wigan after only four months in charge

Warren Joyce Wigan
Warren Joyce took charge of Wigan on Nov. 2.

Wigan have become the latest Championship club to sack their manager having ended Warren Joyce's reign just four months after it started.

After Norwich axed Alex Neil on Friday and Derby dispensed with Steve McClaren on Sunday, Wigan followed suit in removing Joyce from his post with the club four points adrift of safety with only nine fixtures remaining.

Wigan, who have placed assistant Graham Barrow in temporary charge for the remainder of the campaign, won only six of their 24 fixtures under...

Defender Aden Flint popped up with the only goal two minutes from time to give Bristol City a crucial 1-0 Sky Bet Championship victory at fellow strugglers Wigan.

With both sides in the bottom three before kick-off, it was a predictably tight game of few chances at the DW Stadium.

But with time almost up, Flint stabbed home from a yard to lift City out of the drop zone at Blackburn's expense - and leave Wigan four points adrift of safety with only nine games to go.

Wigan boosted their Sky Bet Championship survival chances with a hard fought 1-0 win at fellow strugglers Birmingham.

Defender Dan Burn scored what proved to be the winner in the first half at St Andrew's against the club for whom he enjoyed a successful loan spell in 2013.

The Latics, who have won more away points from home than at the DW Stadium this season, remain in the bottom three but are now only two points from safety after a first win in five league outings.

Birmingham, meanwhile, are only...
