Wigan will be without Martyn Waghorn against Brighton, although Jason Pearce is free to play in a contest which could seal Latics' relegation fate.

Waghorn, a substitute against Millwall on Tuesday, was sent off within eight minutes of coming on and his subsequent three-match ban will keep him out for the rest of the season.

His next game in a Latics shirt will definitely come in Sky Bet League One if they fail to beat the Seagulls, but defender Pearce is eligible to feature after the three-match ban...

Millwall grabbed at their possible relegation lifeline by beating Wigan 2-0 in a dramatic win-or-bust encounter.

Goals from Jimmy Abdou and Magaye Gueye settled a bad-tempered clash which looks certain to spell the end of Wigan's stay in the Sky Bet Championship.

Both sides learned on Monday that Rotherham, the team directly above them just outside the drop zone, could face a three-point penalty for fielding an ineligible player.

And it was the Lions who came out on top to cut the deficit on the Millers,...

Gary Caldwell debuted as Wigan manager on Friday night.

Gary Caldwell may not be a miracle worker but he has at least breathed some life into Wigan after they twice came from behind to draw 2-2 at Fulham.

Former Latics defender Caldwell, the surprise choice to replace the axed Malky Mackay as manager earlier this week, has inherited a team stuck in the Championship bottom three and looking doomed to relegation.

The 32-year-old Scot must have feared the worst when he saw his side concede after just three minutes at Craven Cottage thanks to Ross McCormack's...

Wigan appoint Gary Caldwell after Malky Mackay axe

Caldwell arrived at Wigan from Celtic in January 2010
Wigan have turned to Gary Caldwell to boost their relegation fight.

Wigan have appointed club captain Gary Caldwell as their new manager, just a day after the departure of Malky Mackay.

Mackay was relieved of his duties following Wigan's 2-0 defeat to Derby on Easter Monday, which left them eight points adrift of safety in the Championship table.

Wigan sack manager Malky Mackay with relegation looming

Malky Mackay is no longer manager of Wigan after Monday's defeat.

Wigan have announced they have parted company with manager Malky Mackay in a statement on their website.

The move came shortly after Wigan lost 2-0 at home to Derby County, leaving the relegation-threatened Latics eight points from safety with only five games to play.

Mackay joined Wigan in November after Uwe Rosler was sacked, and although the former Cardiff manager improved the team's away form, he failed to win a single home game in his time in charge.

Chairman David Sharpe, who only replaced...
